Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace

Publisher: The Caxton Printers, Ltd. Caldwell, ID, 1953
Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace: A Critical Examination of the Foreign Policy of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Its Aftermath. By Harry Elmer Barnes (ed), et. al. Caldwell, ID: The Caxton Printers, Ltd. 1953. Hardcover. This is a revisionist view of Roosevelt’s foreign policy. "This book deals in frank and fearless fashion with the most ominous turning point in American and world history. This has involved the abandonment of the traditional balance-of-power policy in world affairs and of the American principles of neutrality and noninvolvement in the power politics and internecine quarrels of the Old World. In place of these historic traditions and practices there has appeared a policy of interventionism and global meddling which tends to transform every border quarrel into a world war and threatens to extinguish what remains of the civilization which has been built up over the centuries. More specifically the volume treats of the origins, course, and results of the disastrous foreign policy of the United States from 1937 to the present time…." xiii + 677 pages with index. Book is in GOOD condition; expected wear for a book of this age and genre, but no major flaws. Dust jacket is in GOOD condition; edgewear, especially at top of spine. Good. Hard Cover. The Spirit of the Eastern Shore

Publisher: J. R. Barnes, 1933
This booklet was written in response to an article in the Baltimore Sun, written by Henry L. (H.L.) Mencken. Written during the Depression years, it provides an interesting commentary and point of view. 15 pages. This is a RARE TITLE that is very difficult to find!!! . No Jacket. Soft Cover. Handbook on African Violets and Their Relatives (Handbook on Gesneriads: African Violets, Gloxinias and Their Relatives)

Publisher: Brooklyn Botanic Garden Brooklyn, NY, 1967
"This Handbook on African Violets and their kin (Gesneriads) is likely to surprise at least some of our readers because it differs from other Handbooks in our Plants and Gardens series. Over the years we have presented authoritative information on many kinds of plants--and the ‘whos and whys’ of gardening and horticultural practices. From time to time articles have included a smattering of botanical terminology, but in this Handbook reader will find more botanical technical descriptions than usual; they seem essential to proper treatment of this little-known family--the Gesneriaceae. "What is this family and why is it unknown to many gardeners? It is a group of mostly tropical plants of more than 100 different genera and perhaps as many as 2, 000 different species. Many of these make interesting and attractive house plants in colder climates. To grow such plants rewardingly, let Henry Teuscher be your guide (page 4). And the grasp the diversity of the family, turn to Guest Editor Batcheller’s illustrated Dictionary of Gesneriads (page 20). We are particularly indebted to Alfred Byrd Graf for photographs of some of the rarer and more unusual species…." Well illustrated with black and white photographs. 82 pages. No Jacket. Soft Cover. Cape Henlopen Lighthouse

Publisher: Henlopen Publishing Co. Dover, De, 1970
The Cape Henlopen Lighthouse. By John W. Beach. Dover, DE: Henlopen Publishing Co., 1970. Oversized hardcover. "A limited and numbered first edition of which this is number 890." SIGNED by the author on title page. "This book is about a lighthouse which was built on Cape Henlopen, Delaware in 1765 and fell from its precarious position, atop a shifting sand hill, and into the encroaching sea in 1926. In building a base so the reader may better understand lighthouses and their purpose the author begins at the beginning, and takes the reader from accounts of the earliest known lighthouses in the world to the building and fall of the Cape Henlopen. Lighted navigational aids may have been constructed on Cape Henlopen as early as 1630, but the permanent stone structure built in 1765 was credited with being only the second oldest in the United States. Boston light built in 1716 is credited with being the first in the United States." Well illustrated. 92 pages. Book is in VERY GOOD condition. Owner nameplate on inside of front cover. The Laws of Scientific Hand Reading: A Practical Treatise on the Art Commonly Called Palmistry

Publisher: G. P. Putnam's Sons New York, 1912
The Laws of Scientific Hand Reading: A Practical Treatise on the Art Commonly Called Palmistry. By William G. Benham. New York: G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 1912. Seventh printing. Hardcover. This is a serious look at palmistry from the point of view of a practitioner. "There has never been conceived or made by man any instrument, machine, or contrivance, capable of such a diversity of usefulness as the human hand. Nothing has ever existed with such infinite adaptability to various needs, or capable of being trained to such degrees of dexterity and versatility. Nor is it likely that as perfect a machine will ever be produced by human skills, for the only thing the human hand cannot do is to creat an instrument as perfect as itself. There is no possible question but that the fineness or coarseness of a human hand indicates whether it can better do fine or coarse work, nor is there a doubt but that the other markings on it show for what lines of work it is best adapted. The delicate hand of a lady cannot perform the same hard labor as the large, strong hand of a blacksmith, nor can the blacksmith do the fine embroidery so deftly wrought by the lady’s hand. Neither has the blacksmith’s brain the little embroideries of the mind. His brain is of heavier construction, hers more delicately built. His hand, like his brain, is heavy; her hand is fine like her brain. Never was there a hand that did not exactly reflect the brain that directs it, and this is the basis from which a scientific study of the hand must begin. To get at the secrets of the mind embodies the effort toward which scientific hand-reading aspires, for mind is the guiding force of life. Upon that hypothesis are based the teachings of this book…." Very well illustrated as appropriate to the text. xxiv + 635 pages + 2 pages of advertisements. Book is in GOOD or better condition; some aging, but binding is tight and text pages clean. Childless: A Study of Sterility, Its Causes and Treatment

Publisher: Emerson Books, Inc. New York, 1947
Childless: A Study of Sterility, Its Causes and Treatment. By Sam Gordon Berkow, M.D. New York: Emerson Books, Inc., 1947. Hardcover. "This book attempts to combine a description of the biochemistry of fertility, which has been affected profoundly by the civilized mode of life, with a discussion of sterility, which, the author hopes, will be of value to some of the two million childless couples in the United States. Fertility is a broad and, in the present incomplete state of our knowledge, an intricate subject. For example, the amazing expansion of our data on sex hormones in recent years has created, even in professional circles, an atmosphere of bewilderment and confusion. Only the scientific caution of such pioneers as Dr. Robert T. Frank has kept the medical Alices from scurrying down rabbit holes into a delightful, but unsubstantial, Wonderland…." 307 pages with index. Book is in GOOD to VERY GOOD condition. Bronzes: Sculptors & Founders 1800-1930

Publisher: Abage Publishers Chicago, IL, 1974
Bronzes: Sculptors & Founders 1800-1930. By Harold Berman. Chicago, IL: Abage Publishers, 1974. First edition (stated). Oversized hardcover. "Here is the first definitive reference book dealing exclusively with collectable bronzes and the men who made them. Because of the commercial nature of these bronzes, they and their makers have been largely ignored, while a few sculptors--and painters who sculpted--have received an inordinate amount of praise. The era covered saw a rise and decline of giant foundries. They cast millions of fine statuettes and other ‘works of art’ for the general public. Today, these metal pieces are being sought and collected, both for their esthetic beauty and investment value. Extensive research culminated in this book’s publication. For the first time hundreds of sculptures, representative of the years 1800-1930, are recognized and identified. For those who simply want to inspect or study the bronzes there are over 700 fine photos on 129 plate pages; for those who want to read about them, 41 caption pages present capsulated descriptions. And for those who desire knowledge in the area of collecting/investing, there are informative articles." 224 pages with index. Book is in VERY GOOD condition; minor edgewear. Christians in the Arab East: A Political Study

Publisher: Lycabettus Press Athens, Greece, 1975
Christians in the Arab East: A Political Study. By Robert Brenton Betts. Athens, Greece: Lycabettus Press, 1975. Hardcover. SIGNED by the author on title page! "….The merit of the study that follows is that it describes what few Western Christians can rightly conceive, the altogether different role that his co-religionists must play in the life of the Middle East where they are in proportion to the population hardly more numerous than Negroes in America. A minority, sometimes welcome, sometimes not, is often wounded. It is drawn to its own community, where corporate strength is a precious resource. Survival requires special skill, special faith; the community is constantly winnowed by the loss of those without courage and those too selfish to persevere. So the little band is purged and matured, until it has a unique and precious contribution to make to the very society which is at the same time its scourge and its nourishment. Such has been the role of Christians in the Moslem lands of the Middle East. Here is traced the history of their several communities in each country…." xvii + 293 pages with index.
