A Nation's Security: The Case of Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer

Publisher: Secker & Warburg London, 1955
"When in June, 1954, the United States Atomic Energy Commission declared that ‘the continued employment of Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer is not clearly consisted with the national security’ they made an historic decision. The question it raised was not merely whether an individual scientist should be employed on government work--it was nothing less than the position of the scientist in society. Dr. Oppenheimer was, and is, a scientist of world-wide reputation, who contributed probably more than any other single man to the work at Los Alamos which resulted in the construction of the first atomic bomb. After the war he was for some time Chairman of the United States Atomic Energy Commission. It came as a profound shock, therefore, to Americans and to the whole Western world when it was larned that this outstanding man was to be the subject of an investigation as to his fitness to be the repository of State secrets. "The hearing before the Security Board lasted more than three weeks: many of the most prominent American physicists, as well as public figures in other walks of life, gave their testimony; and the original transcript of the proceedings contains nearly a million words. This abridged version, shorn of non-essentials, but preserving all the main lines of argument, has the quality of a tragic drama. There is the absorbing spectacle of a distinguished man facing the crisis of his career, called upon to answer for his past, and to hear his every motive and action argued over and analysed to the last detail. And always in the background are the great questions of individual conscience and of national security in the age of total war. "Did the Atomic Energy Commission make a right decision or a wrong one? This book takes no sides, but gives the evidence and leaves each reader to decide for himself." 398 pages. Good. Hard Cover. Book condition: Good

Ginza Go, Papa-san

Publisher: Charles E. Tuttle Company Rutland, VT, 1956
"Ginza Go, Papa-san grew out of a witty essay in the Saturday Evening Post and is a book whose charm and homor is so singular that it is best explained by a synopsis of a few of the sixteen chapters: "Let’s All Climb Fuji-san, in which a middle-aged man (only the moustache is old) forms the Allan R. Bosworth Memorial Expedition and it’s proven that one can climb 1, 600 feet on three bottles of bourbon, concluding with ‘Bee-hind justa rittle hurt.’ "The Templed Hills of Koya-san, wherein Papa-san visit’s the famous Buddhist retreat located on Mt. Koya and discovers that true religion neither knows nor acknowledges any racial barriers and that a love of humanity whether expressed in English or Japanese is a refreshing discovery. "Sashimi! O-sushi! Raw, Raw, Raw! In which Papa-san fights with the raw dishes served at a Japanese meal and discovers that some are so raw that they aren’t even dead. Concluding with a sensational battle with the ollest oddity of all raw Japanese delicacies--the octopus. "Some Elder Literary Gentlemen, wherein the opinions on Japan of Hearn, Paris, and Very Proper Englishmen are seen in retrospect and it is proposed that either too much or too little affection for people hampers understanding. "Driving is Justa Little Different, in which Papa-san looks up some driving rules at the Tokyo Central Police Station sees: ‘When a passenger of and the foot heave in sight, tootle the horn. Trumpet at him. Melodiously at first, but if he still obstacles your way tootle him with vigor’. "Through his wit, humor, and love of people, Allan R. Bosworth has captured a quality of profound understanding seldom found in the more learned and academic works on the Japanese. A deep and abiding affection for the people of Japan has neither dulled his keen wit nor affected his objectivity. In Ginza Go, Papa-san he has succeeded in achieving a delicate balance between humor and understanding that makes light, informative, and poignant reading." Nicely illustrated. 208 pages. No Jacket. Sarah Josepha Hale and Godey's Lady's Book

Publisher: Isabelle Webb Entrikin Philadelphia, PA, 1946
"Sarah Hale was one of the foremost women of her own day, and her influence extended into the lives of almost every middle class household in the United States. The considerably literary reputation which she enjoyed does not hold up very well today, although she achieved immortality with her poem ‘Mary’s Lamb’. But her many general activities cover much ground of social and historical significance in the fields of charitable enterprise, education, and the recognition of women within well defined limits. All of these subjects were developed in her magazines in contrast to the usual slight fare of the women’s periodicals. "Her contribution to literary history is important on several ccounts. As editor of two widely circulated magazines, from January 1828 until December 1877 she insisted that all contributions be original. When they were not forthcoming from contributors she herself wrote stories, essays, articles and verses to fill the magazine. Contrary to almost universal custom among American editors, she did not borrow from English publications or from other American ones. She encouraged American writers, men and women, to write of their own knowledge and background, and spoke among the first for the cultivation of an indigenous school. "She was quick to recognize the merits of originality and nationalism in american writing, and her review columns maintained a running commentary upon the best poetry, fiction, history, biography and essays written during her long life. Although she herself wrote two plays, the dramatic history of the time was noticeably absent from her pages…." vi + 160 pages with index. This is a RARE TITLE that is difficult to find!!! Book is in Fair or better condition; discoloration to pages. No Jacket. Soft Cover. Book condition: Fair Privately Printed

War Service

Publisher: Five Corners Publications, Ltd Plymouth, VT, 1997
"War Service is the story of a real dog--a dog who served the United States courageously during the Second World War, giving hs life to our country. "While working for the Animal Welfare League in Arlington, Virginia, Eilleen Gardner Galer came across a letter from the War Department detailing this dog’s heroic deeds and untimely death. Ms. Galer felt that more people should be aware of the great services performed by such canines. Dogs were used throughout the war and served brilliantly as messengers and companions, enabling communications under conditions where men and radio were useless. "While War Service is fiction, the incidents and characters in this book are based upon real life. Ms. Galer has written a riveting story borrowing facts and characters from her own long life spanning the 20th century. You will find War Service an accurate retrospective of patriotism in our country from recollections of the Civil War to the Second World War." 91 pages. ISBN: 1886699054. No Jacket. Soft Cover.
